Analytical Techniques for Policy Development - Purpose of this Course

This one-semester distance education course is offered at the graduate level for those intended on a career in policy analysis or planning. It addresses selected methods of policy analysis in local or municipal settings as they relate to social and physical planning. Its purpose is to provide students with an understanding of and practical experience in:

  • Theories of public policy analysis and their context in planning;

  • Current practice and trends in policy analysis;

  • Methods of policy analysis; and

  • The role of the analyst as both technical and strategic advisor.

The course is internet-based and interactive. It is divided into four units corresponding to the topics above. A course kit containing a student guide, required readings and an annotated bibliography and other learning resources is included with the course.
